Watch.

In the ER, we are taught to turn towards the pain of others. We are not given as deliberate advice on how to care for ourselves despite the adversity we see, and the inevitability of being hurt by. This is talk to a thousand front-line emergency workers, about how to help others without hurting yourself (as learned through complete failure).

Hi Dr. J
Just finished and thoroughly enjoyed Life On The Ground Floor. Brought back some closely held memories. I did two tours with MSF in Rwanda and Burundi in 94 and 95, taught anesthesia in Addis and Madagascar with very few resources available, as you pointed out. Few of my students remained in Ethiopia but luckily a few did to the countries benefit. I can relate to your comments. Thanks for your invite.
